Q.. How do I show the extensions for files?

A. Open My Computer, and select Folder Options from the Tools menu.
Click on the View tab, turn off Hide MS-DOS file extensions for known file types, and press OK.
This also works for all Windows later than Windows98.

Q. How do I display the date in the Tray (next to the clock)?

A. Download and install TrayDate. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/software/traydate

Note that you can also hold your mouse cursor over the clock for more than a second, and the date will appear temporarily.

Q. How do I sort the Start Menu alphabetically?

A. Here's the easy way, although you can only do it one folder at a time, and it won't stay sorted when new items are added:
Right-click on an item in the folder you want to sort, and select Sort by Name.

Q. How do I change the font used in Explorer?

A. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, choose Properties, and click on the Appearance tab.
Choose Icon from the list of Items, and select the desired font name and size - this will also be used in Explorer.

Q. How do I change a file association on the fly?
A. Hold Shift while right-clicking on a file, and select Open With....

Q. try to run defrag and when it gets about a third of the way through the machine "locks up". Ran Msconfig and am on "selective startup" with only systray and explorer running. Any suggestions. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

A. Boot to SAFE MODE. Defrag from there.
